Intro to Backcountry Touring

For Intermediate-Expert Skiers & Snowboarders

Learn the basics of backcountry touring from our PSIA instructors and AMGA certified guides. Intro classes are limited to 6 students and cover touring & safety equipment, skinning, kick turns, downhill transitions, skating, and downhill ski practice, all with instructor demos, evaluation and feedback. It's the safest and easiest way to give touring a try, right here on Mammoth Mountain.

$179 (Lift ticket NOT included. A valid season pass or lift ticket for the day of the tour is required).

Location

Main Lodge. Classes meet on the snow, in between the Panorama gondola building and Main Lodge at 9AM.

Provided Equipment

Avalanche safety equipment (beacon, probe and shovel) will be provided in a backpack to each student and is included in the class fee.

Required Equipment

The following items are NOT provided or covered by the class fee and must be secured separately PRIOR TO CLASS.  Rentals are available at Mammoth Mountaineering Supply in town (888.395.3951) with a 20% discount for clinic students. Students must have the following items in hand at the beginning of the clinic:

  • Skis with AT bindings (or a Splitboard for snowboarders)
  • AT boots (for skiers)
  • Adjustable touring poles
  • Skins (already fitted to skis or splitboard)

Recommended Equipment

  • Sunscreen, chapstick
  • 1-2L of Water
  • Snacks
  • Face mask or Balaklava
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses and Goggles
  • Gloves (2 pair - 1 being a thin liner type)
  • Ski socks, ski pants, ski jacket
  • Long Underwear
  • Upper Body Base Layers - 1 thin, 1 thicker)
  • Down or Synthetic Fill Jacket
  • Emergency hand warmers
  • Emergency blanket

This clinic is a prerequisite for the sidecountry tours below. A morning intro clinic and an afternoon sidecountry tour can be done in the same day.

For Intermediate-Expert Skiers & Snowboarders

Get a real taste of touring with an AMGA certified guide right off the backside of Mammoth Mountain. Beginning at the summit gondola station and ending back at Main Lodge, this picturesque 3-hour tour is ideal for first-timers, those looking for a backcountry refresher, or anyone interested exploring Mammoth's extraordinary sidecountry.

Important Details

  • All students must complete the 3-hour Intro to Backcountry Touring clinic above prior to taking this sidecountry tour. Intro clinic and a sidecountry tour can be done in the same day.
  • All trips require a minimum of two guests to proceed
  • 24-hour advanced booking is recommended
  • All tours are subject to cancellation or alteration in the event of severe weather or unfavorable avalanche conditions

A small group and instructor is an ideal way to learn the basic techniques you'll need to shred the halfpipe, jumps and jibs found in the famous Unbound terrain parks. Our certified ski and snowboard instructors help you master the tricks you're interested in and progress through the different parks at your own pace.

This is Mammoth's premier ski clinic for women, taught by women. Our top female instructors are eager to take you all over Mammoth Mountain's exciting terrain. Take on new challenges while working on your personalized goals. This is a great way to meet other female skiers and have some girl time on the mountain.

Whether you have always wanted to ski moguls like a pro or just want to learn how to handle bumps when you encounter them, this camp is for you. Two days of skiing – concentrating on moguls – will teach you specific bump techniques and help take your overall skiing to the next level.

Mountain Rangers Program

Mountain Rangers Program

8-Week Series for All Ability Levels Ages 4–10

This ultimate lesson program runs from early January to March and is intended to develop all-mountain skiing and riding skills from coaches who specialize in teaching kids. Students are placed in classes by age and ability during the first week. Each kid also receives an awesome Mountain Rangers souvenir.

10-Week Series for Intermediate–Advanced Levels

Receive 10 weeks of lessons for one incredibly low price. Take advantage of intermediate and advance-level ski or snowboard group lessons to and take your skills to a new level. Each week, you'll work with Mammoth's top pros in a small group of shredders focused on the same skills and terrain.

Meet other skiers and riders of your level as you explore the mountain in search of the best terrain and snow with a top pro as your guide. You can also gather your own friends to form a group and have your own personal instructor for the whole season.
